Michael Gemmell is a third-year undergraduate at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, studying with Stephen Coombs. Local to Peebles, he returns for his début solo recital to share a programme of works by one of his most favoured composers Franz Schubert. To open the programme Michael introduces a modern piece written in Schubertian style with a heartfelt link to Scotland.

Before beginning his studies at the RCS Michael spent two years as a piano teacher and accompanist locally, teaching up to 22 pupils weekly. In 2023 he was placed second in the Scottish Young Musicians Competition, and the following year became the first musician from the Scottish Borders in 21 years to reach the finals of the Rotary Young Musician Competition. He made his début as a soloist in 2024 performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto no 23 with the Peebles Orchestra.
