About this event
The 2021/22 season of Music in Peebles concerts culminates with a performance of ‘The Crucifixion’ by John Stainer in Peebles Old Parish Church on Tuesday 12 April 2022 by Strathclyde University Chamber Choir.
Local choirs, and anyone who loves to sing, are invited to join in the five hymns that Stainer included in his work for congregational participation. In preparation for this, Alan Tavener (director of Strathclyde University Chamber Choir), together with Rebecca Tavener, will be leading a special singing workshop in the church at 2.30pm on Saturday 2 April.
The workshop will last approximately three hours, including a break during which tea/coffee and biscuits will be available. To take part, simply purchase a ticket for the concert on 12 April – the workshop is included in the ticket price! Do remember, if you want to take part in the workshop, please buy your concert ticket before 2 April.
This is a great opportunity to receive coaching from one of the UK’s leading chorus directors, and to prepare for what promises to be a thrilling and uplifting concert!

Alan Tavener is one of the UK’s leading chorus directors. As Director of Music at Strathclyde University, he founded Strathclyde University Chamber Choir in 1980 and then in 1982, together with his wife Rebecca, went on to found Cappella Nova, a multi-award winning professional vocal ensemble with which he has toured worldwide. In 2020, he was awarded the BEM ‘for services to choral music in Scotland’.
Introducing this special workshop, Alan Tavener writes as follows:
“Do you love to sing? Would you like some tips on happy and effective singing?
“This informal Workshop is designed to bring confidence to anyone who enjoys singing. Under the guidance of experienced Workshop Leaders, Alan & Rebecca Tavener (and through the singing of the classic hymns from Stainer’s Crucifixion), the Workshop will combine enjoyment – yes, fun! – with a sense of learning about healthy and effective voice production. Just a little help and advice with these things can make the act of singing all the more enjoyable, so do join us – no musical expertise or experience is required, all you need is any kind of voice…”
