Folk Roots

Colin and Jâms return to Peebles with a programme exploring the enduring influence of folk music on the classical tradition. From lyrical song and spiritual dance to works infused with the colours and rhythms of vernacular music, Folk Roots traces a rich musical journey across centuries and countries. Combining virtuosity, lyricism and a distinctive Scottish perspective, the programme reveals how folk traditions continue to inspire some of the most compelling music ever written.

Colin, brought up in Peebles and a former member of Peebles Orchestra (he appeared as soloist with the Orchestra in May 2026) studied at St Mary’s Music School and the Royal College of Music. For 12 years he was the first violin of the Maxwell Quartet.

Jâms, from Anglesey, studied at Girton College, Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music, and now performs both in the UK and internationally as a soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist. He has recently been appointed artistic director of the Fishguard Festival of Music in Pembrokeshire.
