Young Musicians’ Showcase – Gina McCormack introduces:
AKELA
Clara Glasdam & Gustav Ranum (violins),
Kirsten Wilbrandt Kjær (viola), Oskar Reuben Friis-Hansen (cello)
The Patron’s Concerts have been highlights of recent seasons, introducing our audience to some outstandingly talented young musicians, hand-picked for us by Gina McCormack. Appearances at these concerts have already led to follow-up engagements with Music in Peebles, including the Kowalski-Reyes Duo in our January 2021 recorded concert. We are delighted that Gina will present another Young Musicians Showcase this season, in which she will introduce AKELA, an excellent young string quartet from Denmark.
AKELA was founded in 2019 at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and has since been interpreting the quartet repertoire with presence and curiosity under the tutelage of Professor Tim Frederiksen at chamber music festivals, international masterclasses, competitions and in concerts all over Denmark. All four members have played together in the Danish National Youth Orchestra, which has greatly contributed to their strong common musical and personal understanding. Individually, the four members are an active part of Danish musical life, both in their soloistic endeavours and as part of many orchestras in Denmark. For all of them, though, their biggest passion is chamber music, which they always approach with creativity and openness.
AKELA have chosen favourite quartets by Mozart and Mendelssohn as the main works in their programme, and will begin with a short work from their homeland, Carl Nielsen’s Andante Lamentoso, subtitled “At the bier of a young artist”. Gina describes that piece as ‘very intense, beautiful, and dedicated to the Danish painter Oluf Hartmann, at whose funeral it was played’.
